The Pediatric / Neonatal intensive care unit is a mixed unit, comprising of 8 beds and one isolation bed. It is located on the second floor of the hospital. The unit is looked after by a team comprising of a Pediatric intensivist, pediatric consultants, post graduate pediatric trainees (DNB), PICU/NICU trained nurses and hospital assistants.

Overview

PICU/NICU:

The Pediatric/Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a mixed unit, comprising 8 beds and one isolation bed. It is located on the second floor of the hospital. The unit is looked after by a team comprising a Pediatric intensivist, pediatric consultants, postgraduate pediatric trainees (DNB), PICU/NICU-trained nurses, and hospital assistants. The unit focuses on providing standard, holistic, and evidence-based care to all patients, and ensures in treating all patients and their relatives with dignity and respect. The unit strictly practices hand hygiene and anti-septic non-touch technique (ANTT) to prevent hospital-acquired infection. The unit is well trained and equipped to manage critically ill newborns including premature, very low, and extremely low birth weight babies; and critically ill children from the age of 1 month up to 16 years of age, including surgical/trauma cases. The services provided are:

  • Conventional Paediatric and neonatal ventilation
  • Non-invasive bubble CPAP
  • High-flow nasal cannula oxygen
  • Regular monitoring of blood gas
  • Invasive blood pressure monitoring
  • Etco2 monitoring for all ventilated patients
  • Procedures such as peritoneal dialysis, ultrasound-guided vascular access; chest tube insertion, exchange transfusion
  • Hemodialysis (for bigger children)
  • Bedside X-rays, ultrasound
  • Bedside Echocardiography.

Pediatric Critical Care Transport

The critical care unit also provides transport service with the help of a trained team, a well-equipped ALS ambulance, and a transport ventilator (Hamilton). Patients are transported within the hospital for imaging purposes (CT scan). The team performs level 3 transfer of patients from other hospitals to CIHSR (retrieval), and vice versa.
