ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES


On 20’“ September 2010, an MOU was signed between the North Eastern Council, the Government of Nagaland and CIHSR to set up the Regional Institute of Allied Health Sciences at Dimapur, Nagaland, with the view to train Allied Health Professionals from Nagaland and the rest of the North Eastern states.

Of the 12 planned courses, five courses have already started:

  • Diploma in Radiodiagnosis Technology (DRT)
  • Diploma in Medical Records Technology (DMRT)
  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT)
  • Diploma in Optometry and Ophthalmic Technology (DOOT)
  • Diploma in Anaesthesia Technology (DAT)

These courses are affiliated to the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI). The CMAI is the pioneer for Allied Health Sciences training in India and their graduates are well placed in various parts of the world.
It is also proposed to introduce BSc courses in Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Records Technology and Anaesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology subject to university approval.

★ Diploma in Optometry and Ophthalmic Technology (DOOT)


Optometrists or optometric physicians are primary eye care professionals concerned with vision care. They are experts in determining one’s refractive error and prescribing appropriate correction. They deal with vision screening (eye testing), diagnosis of visual problems, orthoptics and vision training, optometric counseling of patients with partial sight, colour blindness and hereditary vision defects, and designing and fitting of spectacles, contact lenses and low visionaids.
The scope for optometric practice in India and abroad is high and unlimited. It offers a dynamic and challenging career. After completing this course an Optometrist has various career opportunities. They can work with an Ophthalmologist, or in an optical shop, evaluating patients for vision defects and providing the corrective lenses.

The following subjects will be covered during this course.

1st Year:

  • Ethics and Value Education
  • English and Computer
  • Fundamentals
  • Basic Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Nursing Methods)

2nd Year:

  • Clinical Optometry
  • Refraction
  • Applied and Community Optometry

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Minimum Qualification for application:

  • Pass in I0 +2 examinations or its equivalent in Science Stream (PCB)
  • Minimum marks obtained should have been at least 40
    aggregate (35% for SC/ST)
  • A good knowledge of English and Physics is essential.

Age limit:

Age should be I7 years by December 31st of the joining year and not over 35 years.

Note: After the successful completion of second year examinations, students will undergo six months of Compulsory Internship. The Diploma Certificate will only be issued after the completion of the Internship.

★ Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT)


It is a health profession that deals with the identification, treatment and prevention of diseases with the help of clinical laboratory tests. These professionals assist doctors, scientists and research specialists in diagnosing diseases, thereby providing effective treatment for the patients. About 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory reports for which having a well trained professional in a good laboratory setup, is of utmost importance.
A Medical Laboratory Technologist will be required to work with a number of automated analysers and manual machines, which require a high level of skill and expertise. They will also be involved in medical microbiological work to identify disease causing bacteria by staining and cultures.
DMLT course in ClHSR is approved by CMAI (Christian Medical Association of India) and is one of its leading courses. On completion of this diploma course, many universities offer an opportunity to do the BSc course in two years by lateral entry.

The programme aims at achieving the following objectives.

The diploma holder will work in different areas of laboratory such as: Biochemistry, Clinical pathology, Microbiology, Blood bank, Serology, Hematology, Cytology, Parasitology, Immunology, Histopathology, Coagulation and Phlebotomy.
There are excellent job opportunities for qualified medical laboratory technicians. They can work in hospitals, laboratories, public health facilities, or manage their own laboratory setup. There is also a high demand for qualified technicians abroad.

★ Diploma In Anaesthesia Technology (DAT)


An anaesthesia technician is an allied healthcare worker who assists the anaesthesiologist and anaesthetists in acquiring, preparing, and using the equipment and supplies required to administer anaesthesia. They are involved in providing support to the anaesthesia providers for routine and complex surgical cases before, during and after anaesthesia care. Anaesthesia technicians are mainly employed by anaesthesia departments or operating theatre suites, but they may work in a variety of other clinical settings such as interventional and diagnostic radiology, post anaesthesia care units, intensive care units (ICU), cardiac catheterization units, laboratories, emergency departments, endoscopy units , and day surgery clinics.
The Diploma in Anaesthesia Technology (DAT) course in CIHSR is approved by the Christian Medical Association of India(CMAI). The duration of the course is of two years, at the end of which the student will be awarded a diploma certificate by the CMAI on successful completion of the course. At CIHSR the department aims to train students who will become competent in assisting anaesthetists in the safe delivery of anaesthesia and also helping out in various activities in the operation theater and intensive care units. In this programme, students will be taught about the various aspects of anaesthesia, like patient preparation, administration of anaesthesia and monitoring. They will also learn about the care of various equipment used in their field.
Courses in Basic Sciences (which includes Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pathology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology) along with English, Computer Science and Medical Ethics are included in the first year.

★ Diploma in Medical Records Technology (DMRT)


The medical records department forms the backbone of the entire health information system of a hospital, and plays an important role in maintaining all the patients’ records, outpatient and inpatient, as well as the records of all investigations and treatment carried out in the hospital.
Health care providers rely on the information provided in the patients’ medical records in order to diagnose and treat them successfully. The medical records technician plays a vital role in maintaining the records of patient care by compiling, reviewing and filing of all the documents related to the patient’s condition, treatment, and health outcome.
The course includes training in the prevailing system of scientific documentation with computerization, patient’s information search and retrieval of the data when required.
The student also learns how to classify the patients’ condition according to the International Code of Diseases so that the records can be retrieved and used for future analysis and research. The course also includes training in current trends like health insurance, third party payers etc.
Today, medical records are going digital world wide, enabling quicker access, retrieval and analysis. The two-year Diploma course is affiliated to the Christian Medical Association of lndia-CMAI).

Subjects taught are Medical Records Science and Medico Legal Aspects, General and Health Statistics, Computer Science, English Communication skills, Medical Terminology, ICD-10/ lCD-9, Procedural Coding, Anatomy, Physiology, Laboratory Sciences and Hospital Administration.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Minimum Qualification for application:

  • Pass in 10 +2 examinations or its equivalent in all streams
  • Minimum marks obtained should have been at least 40
    aggregate (35% for SC/ST)

★ Diploma in Radio Diagnosis Technology (DRT)


Diagnostic and interventional radiology plays a central role in diagnosis and patient care in any modern hospital. Radiological procedures are essential in practically every field of clinical medicine and only qualified radiography technicians are permitted to operate the machines. This course is designed to impart training and practical experience in taking X-rays of the human body, ultrasound examination Computerized Tomography (CT scans), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
In addition, they are also trained in a variety of special procedures like Intravenous Urography, barium studies and hystero-salphingogram etc. They are also exposed to interventional procedures, digital radiography and the PACS System.
CIHSR offers a two-year diploma course in Radio Diagnosis Technology which is recognized by the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI). As it is mandatory that any radiological equipment be operated by trained personnel, this course offers good job opportunities.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Minimum Qualification for application:

  • Pass in 10 +2 examinations or its equivalent in Science Stream (PCB)
  • Minimum marks obtained should have been at least 40
    aggregate (35% for SC/ST)
  • A good knowledge of English and Physics is essential.

Age limit:

The candidate must have completed the age of 17 years on or before 15th of July.

First Year:

  • Basics of Radiological Physics
  • Radiographic Imaging
  • Communicative English

Second Year:

  • Physics of Radiological equipment
  • Hospital Practice and Care of Patient
  • Radiographic Technique in Routine Procedures
  • Radiographic Technique in Special Procedures
  • Practical & Viva-voce including Computer skills

In addition to the theory classes, they spend a major part of their time gaining hands-on experience under the supervision of their tutors.
